On 3 May 2016, a severe wildfire forced the evacuation of Fort McMurray’s entire population of 90,000 in a single afternoon. At the centre of Canada’s oil sands production, the city became the site of one of the most consequential fires of the early twenty-first century.
Six months later, the photographs in On The Line were made along the city’s sole access road, the route of evacuation.
In 2026, ten years after the fire, the work returns to Fort McMurray as part of the official commemoration with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. The photographs form part of a ten-year arc, tracing the movement from immediate aftermath to long-term reflection. Their inclusion in the public programme places the work within a shared act of remembrance, connecting the archive to the community in which it was first made.
