The tree species black spruce are characterized by the thin trunk and seed crown. The ground here has a thin layer of earth then becomes too hard for the roots to penetrate. The tree roots systems have adapted to the shallow soil, which in the summer can be swampy and in winter become frozen solid. Pockets of tree stand collapses, such as this, are common once the dying roots lose grip.
