The River Derwent and Hobart Town, Lutruwita (c1831- 2019)
The site of John Glover’s easel for The River Derwent and Hobart Town is marked on a bush walk with a placard and seat, though the landscape offers almost no resemblance.
The long view accented by evenly spaced mature eucalyptus, some have fresh epicormic growth from the trunk and others are charred of decaying in the foreground clearly shows the hallmarks of Indigenous Fire Knowledge. The land deliberately thinned of trees deliberately to reduce the risk of a big fire. A staggering difference between the site in 2019, which is entirely more flammable with less aesthetic quality.
Exhibited in ‘WONDER + DREAD’ 12 Dec 30 Jan 2021 at Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, NSW, Australia.
Featured iconic Australian artists Arthur Boyd, Max Dupain, Sidney Nolan, Lloyd Rees, Albert Tucker and many other well known artists including: Glenn Barkly, Sam Byrne, Samuel Elyard, Helga Groves, Rosemary Laing, Marcia Macmillan, Aunty Deidre Martin & Nicole Monks, Alan McFetridge, Joseph McGlennon, Lara Merrett, Susan Norrie, Michael Riley, Cameron Robbins, Luke Shadbolt and William Strutt.
