Fort McMurray’s 2016 Horse River Wildfires: After the Flames

Welcome and thank you.

We would like to ask for your participation in answering a short series of questions about the publication, On The Line and your experience of Fort McMurray’s Horse River Wildfires of 2016.

More About Questions

Who Are We?

Between 2016 and 2017 Alan McFetridge traveled twice to Fort McMurray to try and understand what happened after the Horse River Fire of 2016. His question was what happened after the flames? The publication that resulted from these trips was “On the line” but we know this only captures a limited perspective.

Having recently founded the Centre for Ecological Philosophy, Alan is working alongside visual anthropologist, Emma McLoughlin. Emma started investigating the role of visual culture in visualising and imagining climate and landscape ecology. She wants to understand how photography as a practice can be informed by an ecological philosophy that is more environmentally and socially conscious.

What are our aims?

Together, Emma and Alan are hoping to explore how photography can help in wider community efforts with fire management. How can photography depict and inform what it is like to live in a changing landscape? How can alternatives to the power imbalances found in documentary photography be found? We hope you will join us in this exploration and we value any of your contributions.

Our belief is that by inviting you to participate, share your thoughts and perspectives, the gathered personal accounts from those who were directly effected will build a better understanding of the experience of fire beyond popular news coverage.

We hope to explore the possibilities for an open resource for communities around the globe seeking a better understanding of fire as extremes become more common. Your contribution would be very valuable to this.

Your information

With this project we want to provide a space to share different perspectives and experiences of living with fire initiated by Alan’s publication On The Line. We want to create a space for compassionate learning, reflection, and sharing. The responses collected will build towards the broader aim of an open resource for communities around the globe seeking a better understanding of fire as extremes become more common. By connecting local and global responses, we can build a better picture of the impacts of fire and what it means in different regions.

You are free to provide as much or as little information as you like. No personal information will be published or shared without your permission.

You will have the option to remain anonymous and how you would like your responses to be shared. Responses will be used to inform further work in the Centre for Ecological Philosophy.
